THE MAGICAL UNIVERSE OF WILLIAM BURROUGHS – Part I
Husets Biograf

A weekend dedicated to the American writer William S. Burroughs (1914-1997) and his magical universe. Burroughs published his debut novel Junkie in 1953, and had his final breakthrough six years later with Naked Lunch (1959), a cornerstone in the avant-garde literature of the 20th century.

As an opening for the weekend, the Danish Burroughs expert Lars Movin (author of the recently published book, William S. Burroughs – fra cut-ups til Shotgun Paintings) will give an introduction to Burroughs’ artistic and literary strategies, first of all the cut-up technique, but also touch upon some of the more curious aspects of his activities. Such as the story of how a piece of bad cheesecake in 1972 prompted the controversial writer to launch an attack on a coffee bar in Soho in London, using a camera and a tape recorder to disrupt the time/space continuum. The aim was to cause so much disorder in the cosmic order of things so that the bar would have to go out of business – which it did! The lecture will end with a screening of Towers Open Fire, an 11 minute experimental film made by Burroughs in 1963 in collaboration with Antony Balch, Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville.

The lecture will be in Danish. In connection with the lecture, Lars Movin’s book will be for sale at a special event price.

A portrait of the American Beat Generation writer William S. Burroughs (1914-1997) based on never-before-seen footage from his visit to Denmark in October 1983, and from his later years in Lawrence, Kansas. After having spent more than a quarter of a century outside of the United States, in Mexico, Tangier, Paris and London, Burroughs returned to New York in 1974. Shortly after he began touring and reading his work to new generations of readers and thus establishing himself as a cult figure. The film focuses on Burroughs’ unique talent as a performer, and on his later work, especially what is known as The Last Trilogy. In addition to the historic footage, there are new interviews with friends, colleagues and scholars such as James Grauerholz, John Giorno,
Hal Willner, Jennie Skerl, Regina Weinreich and Ann Douglas. Music by Material, Patti Smith, Islamic Diggers a.o.
